Daily Buddhist Wisdom

Loss of mindfulness is why people engage in useless pursuits, do not care for their own interests, and remain unalarmed in the presence of things which actually menace their welfare.

James and Wade have some soul searching to do. The recent Finals is also a reminder that you don't win championships on paper. Will Miami be back next year? Maybe not. There are a number of teams that are going to be better and will be tougher to defeat. Let's begin with Chicago and the New York Knicks.
Out west teams like Oklahoma and Memphis just seem young and exciting. Look for more teams to play zone against the Heat. Keep Wade and James out of the paint. Will the Heat get a new coach? When will those rumors begin? I'm certain the Heat will make some changes to their bench. I look for Bibby and Howard to be gone. A strong bench is key if you want to finish # 1.

Suppressing the Vote in Wisconsin
Michael Berkowitz, Truthout: "Fred Risser is a veteran Wisconsin state senator. Actually, he is the longest-serving state legislator in American political history. Bald and bearded, quick to laugh, he is the genial grandfather at the family picnic. But Risser was not feeling genial, lately. May 19 he had been recognized to speak and was making a point on the floor of the Wisconsin State Senate. Risser was questioning the constitutionality and ethics of the Republican-sponsored voter suppression bill, AB7. However, State Senate President Mike Ellis, the new majority leader, cut him off - loudly, practically screaming, talking right over him - instead of considering Risser's important legal questions. In over 50 years of serving in the legislature, Risser said that he hadn't seen anything like it."

GOP-Style Democrats Moving to Sell Out Poor, Liberals: Lessons From the DC Budget Fight
Art Levine, Truthout: "It's been less than two weeks since a guerilla campaign by local activists managed to restore about 20 percent of $131 million in budget cuts targeting Washington, DC's, neediest residents - with little help from the mainstream media, which essentially ignored a looming shutdown of the city's shelter, poor and disabled aid services that could have thrown thousands into the street. The city's reluctant Democratic leadership only bowed at the last minute to under-the-radar pressure to reverse some of the most obvious, draconian cuts with $27 million in restorations, especially services to the homeless. Other sources familiar with the lobbying to restore homeless funding point out that some leaders in the local downtown business community were concerned about the impact on the city's image and tourism."

Pleasures of Collaboration: Poets, Dancers, and Musicians at Play.

Join us in an evening of performance pieces that combine dance, music and spoken word—and join in the fun when the audience is invited to contribute to new work. Meet characters such as the wolf at the door, Jane Bowles, a gay fetus, a sea violet and a green conflagration.

These experiments in collaboration were developed by a multi-talented group of artists from Maryland and Washington, DC, during Collaboration Laboratory, the culminating project of Anne Becker’s tenure as Takoma Park poet laureate. Over a 6 week period, these artists, including Karren Alenier, Jodi Beder, Rima Faber, Craig Flaherty, Greta Ehrig, Kate Jordan, James Landry, Hannah Leatherbury, Ashira Malka, Sydney March, Shakaya McFarland, Ken Moss, Orit Sherman, Rosanne Singer, Patrick Smith and Yermiyahu Ahron Taub, explored the layering of movement with the voices of humans and cello, keyboard, guitar, saxophone, flute and percussion.
This performance will be broadcast on Takoma Park's own community television channel.

Split This Rock poetry festival- Call for proposals

Poems of Provocation & Witness: March 22-25, 2012

To E. Ethelbert Miller,

Split This Rock is currently inviting proposals for panel and round table discussions, workshops, and themed group readings for our third national poetry festival, scheduled for March 22-25, 2012, in Washington, DC. The festival will consider the relationship of poets and poetry to power and to the challenges to power. In addition the festival will celebrate the legacy of the late poet-activist June Jordan, as 2012 marks the tenth anniversary of her death.

With the looming proposal submission deadline on June 30th 2011, we are seeking your help by asking you to post our proposal call on your blog. Our 2012 festival promises to be an excellent event and certainly something worth getting involved in.

For full information on the proposal call please follow the link below;

Many thanks,

NBA: Dallas's Title, Not Cleveland's
LeBron James was not the story of the 2011 NBA Finals. Nor was the inelegant demise of his Super Team. The real story was the Dallas Mavericks, a glitz-deprived outfit that captured their first NBA title in team history.

Is This the Way the World Ends?

Eric Best, Truthout: "The purported end of the world came and went, and, to the surprise of few, the rapture did not come to pass on May 21. The world is not, however, out of the woods if you read Peter Nolan's superb book, 'Crossroads: The End of Wild Capitalism and the Future of Humanity.' Nolan's thesis is that unrestrained capitalism, its extremes and its contradictions, have put China, the United States and the world of Islam on a collision course that gives the world 'the choice of no choice.' Either these three models of culture and capitalism will find constructive engagement, or the world as we know it is in extreme peril."

F.B.I. Agents Get Leeway to Push Privacy Bounds

By CHARLIE SAVAGE
The F.B.I. plans to issue a new edition of its manual giving agents more leeway to search databases, go through household trash or use surveillance teams to scrutinize people.
Somebody please turn the HEAT down. I told folks many months ago I didn't see Juwan Howard with a ring. That was my clue Miami was not going home with the bunny or the trophy. JJ Barea guarding James and getting the best of him was a good picture of why Dallas won. Mav Up. King down. Jason Terry is my MVP because he played big in the big game. I'm happy for Dirk. Look for Bosh to be the first to complain a few days from now.
The guy wants the ball more. I still think he needs to play better defense. Wade is a class act and was just trying to do too much. Now look for the owners to bring in the hard cap and force some changes on the Heat team. Oh, and I'm certain somebody is making a new Lebron James commercial. Maybe something about coming so close and not having a Happy Meal. Well- I know one burger that's not ready. Hey - make that three.

SPORTS: CRY ME A VICTORY?
The best thing that could happen to Lebron James tonight is for the Heat to lose.  Call me Shakespeare.
Everyone loves a tragedy. A loss will make this guy look in the mirror and read his tattoos. Championships are won in the heart. Too many owners and players believe you can simply buy one. So, let's see what happens. A monster game from James? He will have to find two bunnies in the hat. One tonight and another on Tuesday. Do you believe in magic or Miami?

REFUGEES, LOVERS AND SURVIVORS

When she undressed the first time
for her lover, the politics from home
failed to escape the darkness.

On arms and legs were scars,
where cigarettes had cooled themselves,
where a bullet wound was the last witness,

to the rape of metal now asleep in bone.

Gov. Robert Bentley of Alabama recently signed a tough immigration law. It's now a crime in that state if you knowingly give a ride in a vehicle to an illegal immigrant. The law requires police officers to inquire about the status of anyone they stop if they suspect the person might be an illegal immigrant.
